T h e goal of t h l s r e s e a r c h is to

s h o w the r e l a t i o n b e t w e e n the

p s y c h o l o g i c a l w o r k on a n a p h o r a

r e s o l u t i o n b a s e d on t h e n o t i o n of a

l i m i t e d s h o r t - t e r m or w o r k i n g m e m o r y a n d

t h e c o m p u t a t i o n a l l i n g u i s t i c s w o r k b a s e d

on t h e n o t i o n of f o c u s i n g

T h i s r a p p r o c h e m e n t is i m p o r t a n t for

t h e f o l l o w i n g reasons:

I) F r o m a t h e o r e t i c a l v i e w p o i n t

c o g n i t i v e e v i d e n c e i n c r e a s e s the

v a l i d i t y of t h e c o m p u t a t i o n a l n o t i o n of focus

2) F o c u s i n g c o r r e s p o n d s to one of t h e

r e a d e r ' s c o m p r e h e n s i o n p r o c e s s e s a n d it

n e e d s to be i n c o r p o r a t e d in the m o d e l of the u s e r in l a n g u a g e u n d e r s t a n d i n g

s y s t e m s to a d e q u a t e l y r e s o l v e

a m ~ i g u i t l e s in the u s e r ' s u t t e r a n c e s a n d

to h a n d l e l a n g u a g e g e n e r a t i o n

A c c o r d i n g to G r o s z ( 1 9 7 7 ) who w a s

Lesgold, Roth, a n d C u r t i s (1979),
