organization formed voluntarily by a group of
people having similar socio-economic aspirations and needs which is owned managed and
controlled in a democratic manner by them

• The main objective is to undertake all smallholder
development programs on a commercial and
participatory basis through their own institutions and to
develop a community of self-reliant smallholders with all
necessary service provided by their own institution The cooperatives are seen as a mechanism to empower the
smallholders to become self-reliant, progressive and
competitive and thereby reducing rural urban imbalances
in development
