A MAN WITH A MISSION

Owen Forrest, one of today’s most famous sculptors, talks about work, inspiration and his new book.

Clean Shaven, with shoulder-length hair, the artist Owen Forrest looks younger than 35 Interviewing him isquite hard, not because he’s a difficult person, but because he’s so agreeable Make a comment about his work andhow it challenges ideas about life in the modern city, and he’ll smile and answer, “Yes, I see your point.” Or he’ll cutyou off in the middle of a question to offer you some more coffee

He isn’t trying to be vague; he’s just a shy young man from central England Perhaps that’s why he seems such

a down-to-earth person Far from having a typical artist’s temperament, he comes across more like a farmer who justhappened to wander into a giant studio in London and start working When I asked him how it felt to represent Britain

at the 2007 Paris Biennale Art Show, he replied that it was “very nice” and that he was rather surprised but, of course, pleased to have been chosen His modesty is rather charming, and highly unusual in an artist

It’s not often that someone of Forrest’s fame will sit down to answer the ordinary person’s questions on suchtopics as where his inspiration comes from, what it’s like to sculpt without machines in today’s mechanized world, orsimply why he does it Forrest says he was prompted to write My hands, My Vision by a sense that many people’sinterest in his art extended beyond mere everyday conversation “I was asked very intelligent questions by people whoweren’t in the art world, from taxi drivers to people in the supermarket queues It made me realize that people have aninterest in what I do which goes beyond browsing in galleries and museums,” he says

My Hands, My Vision avoids the biographical and mainly focuses on Forrests inspiration “The events in my

life haven’t had a huge influence on my work,” he says, though he admits his father’s obsession with wood carving and

Trang 3

Forrest’s personal working style is to build up each sculpture piece by piece He says that this process is notwidely understood “There’s no real vocabulary for discussing whether the artist is skillful, or how intelligent his workis.”

There is still something mysterious about the creation of an amazing sculpture “It’s very personal, veryemotional It’s like building a new friendship,” Owen says “When you are building a new friendship, you have periods

of being very close and times when you are separate It’s similar with sculpting You can spend days working non-stop,and then you find you need to take a break for a week or so Once a sculpture is finished, the process you went through

to create it remains with you, like an old friend.”

Owen includes examples of his early work in My Hands, My Vision “I wanted to make a point about all thosewho criticized my early work as rubbish It wasn’t all bad, and it has affected the work I create today, as well as myapproach to sculpting It was an important building block in my desire to create sculptures where people are challengednot only to view the world in a different way, but their own place in that world.” His success seems to prove he hasachieved his goals

28 Why did the writer feel that interviewing Owen Forrest was difficult?

A He didn’t like to answer questions B He talked too much about himself

C He wasn’t interested in being interviewed D He was too pleasant with his responses

29 What surprised the writer about Owen Forrest?

A He had once worked as a farmer B His behavior wasn’t typical of artists

C He had taken part in a famous art show D His studio was too large to work in

30 Why did Owen Forrest decide to write his book?

A He was tired of answering questions about his work B He knew people were tired of visiting museums

C He wanted to entertain people with his writing D He realized people were curious about his work

31 The main purpose of Owen Forrests book was to………

A give important details of his own life B analyze the difficulties of an art career

C explain how he works as an artist D encourage others to become artists

32 How does Owen Forrest fell about media publicity?

A It isn’t always beneficial B It rarely contains the truth

C It is usually too critical D It isn’t good promotion

33 What does Owen Forrest imply about art critics?

A They have a limited vocabulary B They do not understand sculptors

C They fail to address all the issues in art D They do not recognize some artists’ work

34 When Owen Forrest is making one of his sculptures………

A he wants to create new friendships B he usually takes a week off work

C he goes through a variety of feelings D he keeps going until it’s finished

35 Why did Owen Forrest want to include his early work in his book?

A to show its influence on his later work B to challenge people’s views of the world

C to prove that it was actually very good D to annoy the people who criticize him

AN UNHEALTHY OBSESSION

The Guinness Book of World Records describes Ranulph Fiennes as the world’s greatest living explorer His

expeditions include the first polar circumnavigation of the Earth and the first unsupported crossing of the Antarcticcontinent on foot He has been up the White Nile in a hovercraft, and parachuted onto Europe’s highest glacier Anobsession with diet and fitness comes with the territory, and for years Fiennes has fine-tuned his body to cope with themost inhospitable of environments and the most stressful situations of physical hell So when I read that this model ofphysical fitness had gone and suffered a heart attack - not while planting a flag in a no-man’s- land, but while boarding

a plane - it came as something of a surprise

Even what happened, lesser mortals like myself might be forgiven for wondering whether the benefits offollowing a healthy lifestyle are all they’re racked up to be Why bother exerting all that effort if in the end survivalturns out to be a lottery? Of course fitness and diet are only part of the story “Some people live a healthy lifestyle and

still succumb to heart problems.” health expert Alison Shaw explains Genetics and family history also play a crucial

role in determining who will achieve longevity “It could all be a question of genes”, she says, “but then some peoplenever have a trace of the disease even though their family would seem to make them prime targets.”

Whether or not some people are genetically programmed to have a higher chance of heart disease, there aresteps they can take to reduce their risks A healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and reduced levels ofsaturated fat helps prevent obesity and stops fatty deposits forming in the arteries and blocking them Smoking, incidentally, has the opposite effect, as nicotine increases the heart rate and makes the blood clot more easily

Exercise is highly beneficial as it reduces both the pulse rate and blood pressure so minimizing strain on theheart as it pumps blood round the body It also helps to keep the artery walls more elastic “Whether you’ve got afamily history of heart disease or not, everybody should be living a healthy lifestyle,” Shaw says “We wouldn’t want

Giaoandethitienganh.info

Trang 11

people to stop looking after themselves.”

But can you look after yourself too much? On the subject of exercise, the standard recommendation is to take fivesessions of “moderate” exercise a week, where moderate is a little more than brisk walking “We need to be verycareful when were doing extreme sports or endurance event,” says health expert Len Almond “Extreme physical stresscan impose almost impossible demands on the body’s ability to recover The strain of endurance events such asexploration force biochemical changes in the human body The physiological response to that kind of activity will beextreme and how the body overcomes that is bound to leave some kind of legacy.” So could Fiennes’s love forexploration and endurance events have contributed to his condition? “It could have had an effect, or there may begenetic predisposition and an event could have made it worse,” say Almond “We haven’t done enough research in thisarea.”

This is changing though There is growing interest in sports medicine, a field that arguably began as long ago as490BC when the first person to run the marathon ran the 26 miles from the town of Marathon to Athens with news of avictory over the Persians The man, a soldier called Pheidippides, collapsed as soon as he arrived, and the cause of hissudden demise is not known However, scientists are using athletes like him to answer questions about the effects of

extreme exercise on the heart One group, at the University of Inrsbruck in Austria, studied cyclists taking part in a race called the Tyronlean Otztaler Radmarathon, a one-day event that covers 230km with an altitude change of 5,500m.

They were interested in one particular enzyme, high concentrations of which are found in those who have suffered aheart attack The scientists found that levels of this chemical increased in 13 of the 38 cyclists who completed the race. The largest increases were seen in the youngest, fastest cyclists who had trained the hardest Similar increases in thechemical have been found in competitors in the Hawaii Ironman triathlon and in cross-country skiers

Most of us will never put our bodies to such severe tests But if when you hear about someone like Fiennes youask whether exercise is worth it, I advise you to consider your own priorities Personally, I subscribe to this adage sent

in by a reader to a local newspaper “Run not to add years to your life but to add life to your years.”

(56) ……… We now understand the importance of inheritedcharacteristics more than ever before (57)

……… we are still unableto decide whether an individual’s personality and development are more influenced

by genetic factors (nature) or by the environment (nurture)

Research, relating to identical twins, has highlighted how significant inherited characteristics can be for anindividual’s life (58)……… It seems that the experiences we have in life are so unpredictable and so powerful, that they can boost or over-ride other influences, and there seems to be plenty of research findings to confirm this

(59)……… Instead, the traits we inherit from our parents and the situation and experiences that weencounter in life are constantly interacting It is the interaction of the two that shapes a person’s personality anddictates how that personality develops If this were not true, we would be able to predict the behavior and character of

a person from the moment they were born

influence in a person’s life

C However, it is suggested that parents have the most crucial role in developing a persons traits

D If people ask me, I would say I support the view that good personality is reinforced by good parenting andchildhood experiences

60 A Whether nurture or nature should be scrutinized depends on the perspective of each parent

B Furthermore, these factors are very difficult to control and still leave scientists with many unanswered questions

Every year, thousands of students fly to the United States to spend their holidays working at summer camps In return, they get a free return flight, full board, pocket money and the chance to travel Lucy Gribble joined Camp America and spent eight weeks working at a summer camp for six to sixteen- year-olds.

I applied at the last minute and was so thrilled at the prospect of spending the holidays doing something moreexciting than working in the local supermarket, that I hastily accepted the only job left- in the camp laundry

I started to have my doubts while squashed between the windsurfing instructor and the aerobic teacher during thebumpy three-hour ride to the camp, about 90 miles from New York City Then, on arrival I was told by the campdirector that I would be doing the washing for 200 children - on my own For the first week, the party sent out by thejob agency - seven English students and one Welsh, one Pole and one Australian - became a full-time cleaning squad, getting the place ready for grand opening

We swept out dead birds from the bunkrooms, scrubbed the lavatories, gymnasium and kitchen, polished thecooking equipment, mowed the lawns, put up the sports nets, and lugged any luggage sent on ahead to the bedrooms. After the childrens arrival I had to work from 8.45 in the morning to 10.30 at night to get all my work done “Don’t

worry”, said the director “The kids always throw all their clothes in the wash after five minutes in the first week” I smiled through gritted teeth.

Considering there was no hot water in the laundry and the rickety old machines, the washing came outremarkably well But with so many clothes to wash and dry, some washing did get mixed up I had six-year- oldsmarching up and telling me their parents would be very angry if I did not find their favourite sweater

The kitchen workers and myself found ourselves at the bottom of the camp's class system We were neverinvited to join in the evening activities and at the talent show we were the only six out of the entire camp to beexcluded When we did manage to get out of the camp, our evenings tended to consist of eating ice-cream in the localgas station or driving 20 miles to a restaurant to drink cheap lemonade Despite the unexciting venues, we made thebest of the situation and enjoyed a lot of laughs throughout the summer

The camp itself had a large lake and excellent sporting activities But because organized activities for thechildren carried on into the evening we usually only got the chance to use the tennis courts or the swimming pool

I shared a room with three 18-year-old girls from New York They had never been away from home before and spentmost of the night screaming with excitement They each had three trunks full of clothes and thought it was hilarious

Trang 19

And without Camp Americas free flight to the US - and a rail ticket from my parents - I would never have seenNiagara Falls, climbed the Empire State building, visited Washington DC or had my picture taken with Mickey Mouse

Until fairly recently, explaining the presence of human beings in Australia was not such a problem At thebeginning of the twentieth century, it was thought that Aborigines had been on the continent for no more than 400years As recently as the 1960s, the time-frame was estimated to be perhaps 8,000 years Then in 1969 a geologist fromthe Australian National University in Canberra was poking around on the shores of a long-dried lake bed called Mungo

in a dry and lonely corner of New South Wales when something caught his eye It was the skeleton of a womansticking out slightly from a sandbank The bones were collected and sent off for carbon dating When the report cameback, it showed that the woman had died 23,000 years ago Since then, other finds have pushed the date back further.Today the evidence points to an arrival date of at least 45,000 years ago but probably more like 60,000

The first occupants of Australia could not have walked there because at no point in human times has Australianot been an island They could not have arisen independently because Australia has no apelike creatures from whichhumans could have descended The first arrivals could only have come by sea, presumably from Timor or theIndonesian archipelago, and here is where the problems arise

In order to put Homo sapiens in Australia you must accept that at a point in time so remote that it precedes theknown rise of behaviourally modern humans, there lived ỉn southern Asia a people so advanced that they were fishinginshore waters from boats of some sort Never mind that the archaeological record shows no one else on earth doingthis for another 30,000 years

Next, we have to explain what led them to cross at least sixty miles of open sea to reach a land they couldhardly have known was there The scenario that is usually described is of a simple fishing craft probably little morethan a floating platform - accidentally carried out to sea probably in one of the sudden storms that are characteristic ofthis area This craft then drifted helplessly for some days before washing up on a beach in northern Australia So far, sogood

The question that naturally arises - but is seldom asked - is how you get a new population out of this If its alone fisherman who is carried off to Australia, then clearly he must find his way back to his homeland to report hisdiscovery and persuade enough people to come with him to start a colony This suggests, of course, the possession of

Trang 27

considerable sailing skills

By any measure this is a staggeringly momentous achievement And how much notice is paid to it? Well, ask

yourself the last time when you read anything about it When was the last time in any context concerning humanmovements and the rise of civilisations that you saw even a passing mention of the role of aborigines? They are theplanets invisible people

A big part of the problem is that for most of us it is nearly impossible to grasp what an extraordinary span oftime we are considering here Assume for the sake of argument that the Aborigines arrived 60,000 years ago (that is the

figure used by Roger Lewin of Havard in Principles of Evolution, a standard text) On that scale, the total period of

European occupation of Australia represents about 0.3 percent of.the total In other words, for the first 99.7 per cent ofits inhabited history, the Aborigines had Australia to themselves They have been there an unimaginably long time

28 What did the discovery of the skeleton show?

A Aborigines used to live in very remote parts of Australia

B The area called Mungo, now dry, was once a lake

C Aborigines have been in Australia far longer than previously thought

D The Aborigine population was larger than originally thought

29 Which of the following statements is NOT true, according to the text?

A Australia has always been an island since people existed

B Australian apes became extinct before human times,

C Aborigines probably originated in Timor or Indonesia

D Aborigines must have arrived in Australia by sea

30 Why is it so surprising that Homo sapiens got to Australia?

A It required skills that people generally developed very much later

B People in that area were less advanced than other peoples at this time

C Only much smaller boats have been found elsewhere from this period

D Aborigines are not particularly known for their sailing skills

31 What usually provides the explanation for the Aborigines’ arrival in Australia?

A their curiosity B bad weather C a desire for better fishing D hunger for land

32 This author is puzzled by how

A the boat managed to travel across such dangerous seas

B the aborigines got enough food and water to survive the crossing

C enough people got there to found a settlement

D the Aborigines chose not to return to their homeland

33 Which word could replace “staggeringly” without changing the meaning?

34 What does the writer seem most surprised by at the end of this extract?

A the way that Aborigines managed to establish themselves in Ausưalia

B how badly European settlers treated Australian Aborigines

C how long Australian Aborigines have lived on the continent

D the fact that so little attention is paid to this aspect of human history

35 What are the main points the writer is making in the last paragraph?

A The Europeans had no rights to take over Aborigine land in Australia I

B No one can be exactly certain as to when the Aborigines first arrived in Australia

C The Aborigines have inhabited Australia for much longer than the Europeans have Europe

D The Aborigines were the only people in Australia for most of the time since it was settled

Their findings are based on 101,257 healthy French adults (21% men; 79% women) with an average age of 42years Participants completed at least two 24-hour online validated dietary questionnaires, designed to measure usual(22) of 3,300 different food and beverage items and werefollowed up for a maximum of 9 years (2009-2018) Daily consumption of sugary drinks (sugar sweetened beverages and 100% fruit juices) and artificiallysweetened (diet) beverages were calculated and first cases of cancer reported by participants were validated by medical(23) and linked with health (24) national databases

The results show that a 100 mL per day increase in the consumption of sugary drinks was associated with an18% increased risk of overall cancer and a 22% increased risk of breast cancer (25) the group ofsugary drinks was split into fruit juices and other sugary drinks, the consumption of both beverage types wasassociated with a higher risk of overall cancer No association was found for prostate and colorectal cancers, butnumbers of cases were more limited for these cancer locations (26) , the consumption of artificiallysweetened (diet) beverageswas not associated with a risk of cancer, but the authors warn that caution is needed in(27) this finding owing to a relatively lowconsumption level in this sample

Peter Moon and the Chocolate Factory

Journalist Liz Campbell fulfills a childhood dream of visiting a real-life chocolate factory.

From the outside, the building resembles a caramel square dusted with cocoa As I walk through the revolvingdoors, I am greeted with the pleasing aroma of smooth, sweet, rich chocolate that permeates everything Even in thereception area, where Peter Moon’s wife Leona is busy with Easter orders, I can’t escape this potent scent

If you want to appreciate this for yourself, then allow me to indulge you Get a chocolate bar and, against all yournatural instincts, try to open the wrapper slowly Then take a moment to savour the tantalising smell of chocolateinside Now picture yourself actually inside, confined within the four walls of the wrapper that is shutting in the aromawith you If the mere thought of that sounds good to you, what would it be like to breathe in the aroma of this finechocolate every single day? I ask Leona that very same question “I’m so used to the smell I’ve worked here for solong I don’t even notice it anymore,” Leona admits To my mind, that is an absolute tragedy But she later confessesthat she still eats a few pieces of chocolate every day

I observe Leona as she expertly handles customers who are desperate to get their orders in on time Thefactory’s chocolate has just been given the highest rating in a recent consumer report and needless to say, the ordershave been flooding in The boom in business could explain her high spirits, which I must admit is infectious, and Ican’t help feeling excited about being let into this hidden world

At that moment, Peter Moon enters from a door at the back, dressed in a white hat and a heavy-duty rubberapron After polite introductions, he immediately launches into his favourite topic “Did you know that chocolate

comes from the bean of the Theobroma Cacao tree, which means ‘food of the gods’?” he asks “The Aztecs considered cacao to be man’s inheritance from Quetzalcoatl, the god of air Cacao seeds were made into a drink with the addition

is ready to be filled and brushed over with more chocolate to seal I it Coloured cocoa butter will then be painted on to

it to give it a shiny I exterior It is obvious that a significant amount of care and attention goes I into making Moon’schocolates, and each one is finished lovingly by hand

“We use the freshest ingredients, which are free from artificial I preservatives, and so our products only have ashelf life of three weeks,” I explains Peter By finding ingredients from all around the world, Peter I is responding tothe growing trend of chocolate connoisseurs who hold tasting evenings with friends They enjoy trying to name theorigins of the coca bean that the chocolate is made from, like those who appreciate fine wine As I leave, I learn thatPeter, like his wife, also takes the opportunity to sample his work “I think it’s important to test the products on aregular basis,” he says smiling And yes, if you are wondering, I did get to take some home!

It is often argued that nuclear power offers an unlimited and “clean” source of energy (56)

First, nuclear plants can never be made fully safe As they get older and less reliable, they become unstable andleakages can occur (57)

(58) is that the technology is the same as that used fornuclear weapons, which could make plantsvulnerable to terrorist attacks and lead to a dangerous proliferation of nuclear weapons

(59) The dangers associated with “safe” storage over such a long period are unknown, but it isunlikely that there could ever be complete protection from the threat of earthquakes Are we not just dumping ourproblems onto the future generations?

(60) We need to develop further renewable and efficientsources of energy using the sun, the windand the sea Some countries have made a good start in this direction, but most have done far too little
