I Nghĩa và cách sử dụng

1 Another

• Vừa mang nghĩa của tính từ: khác, nữa và vừa mang nghĩa danh từ: người khác, cái

khác

• Another là một từ xác định (determiner) đứng trước danh từ số ít (singular nouns) hoặc

đại từ (pronouns)

a Another + danh từ số ít (singular noun)

Ex:

- I have just learned Korean culture (Tôi chỉ vừa mới học văn hóa Hàn Quốc.)

- Would you like another cup of coffee? (Bạn uống một cà phê nữa chứ?)

- I think you should go to another beach It would be better (Tôi nghĩ bạn nên đi đến bãi biển

khác Điều này sẽ ổn hơn.)

b Another + one

“another one” được dùng khi thay một danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ đã đề cập đến trước đó để

tránh việc lặp lại

Ex:

- I have already watched this film twice, so I want another one (Tôi đã uống đã xem phim này 2 lần rồi, vì vây tôi muốn đổi phim khác.)

- Her car was broken I think she need another one (Xe cô ấy bị hỏng Tôi nghĩ cô ấy nên mua

xe mới.)

A: I don’t like listening to pop music (A: Tôi không thích nghe nhạc pop.)

B: Okay You can choose another one (B: Được rồi Bạn có thể chọn nhạc khác.)

c Another + số đếm (number) + danh từ số nhiều (plural noun)

Another đứng trước danh từ số nhiều khi có số đếm trước các danh từ, cụm danh từ hay các

từ sau: couple of, a few,

Ex: In another 25 years, I’ll be a successful teacher (Trong 25 năm nữa, tôi sẽ trở thành người giáo viên thành công.)

- I don’t want to hang out with my friends, so I’ll spend another 8 hours at home (Tôi không

muốn gặp gỡ bạn bè, nên tôi sẽ dành ra 8 tiếng để ở nhà.)

- My teacher was given a couple of days to do homework (Giáo viên của tôi giao vài ngày để

hoàn thành bài tập về nhà.)

d Another được sử dụng như đại từ (pronoun)

Ex: - The cake is very yummy I think I’ll have another (Bánh ngon quá Tôi nghĩ là mình sẽ ăn thêm một cái nữa.)

Do đó: another = one more cake

- She doesn’t like this book, so she takes another (Cô ấy không thích sách này nên cô ấy chọn quyển khác.)

Do đó: another = another dress

2 Other

• Mang nghĩa với vai trò tính từ: người hoặc vật thêm vào hoặc những điều đã được nêu

lên, ngụ ý trước đó

• Other cũng là một từ xác định (determiner), đứng trước danh từ số nhiều (plural nouns), danh từ không đếm được (uncountable nouns) và đại từ (pronouns)

a Other + danh từ không đếm được (uncountable nouns)

Ex: Reading helps people reduce stress, other reading has the opposite effect

(Đọc sách giúp con người giải tỏa căng thẳng, những loại khác lại có tác dụng ngược lại.)

b Other + danh từ số nhiều (plural nouns)

“Another” được dùng khi đề cập về một cái khác hoặc thêm một cái, thì “other” sử dụng khi nói nhiều hơn một cái

Ex: - I have other books for you to read (Tôi có nhiều sách khác nữa cho bạn đọc.)

- Do you buy any dress, or are this the only ones? (Bạn có mua váy đầm nào không, hay đây là cái duy nhất?)

- I have told about the exam results to other people Is that fine? (Tôi đã nói cho những người

khác về kết quả kì thi Có sao không?)

c Other + từ xác định (determiners) + danh từ số ít (singular nouns)

“the” là một trong những từ xác định, “the other” là dạng đặc biệt trong trường hợp other sử

dụng trước từ xác định và danh từ số ít

Ex: I can play two music instruments One is guitar and the other is violin (Tôi có thể chơi 2

nhạc cụ Thứ nhất là đàn ghi-ta và thứ hai là đàn dương cầm.)

d Other + ones

Như “another one”, “other ones” dùng để thay cho danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ đã được đề cập

trước đó

Ex: - I don’t like this book I want other ones, please (Tôi không thích sách này Cho tôi những quyển sách khác đi, làm ơn.)

A: You can put on that dress (Bạn có thể mặc váy đầm đó đấy.)

B: Thank you, but I want other ones (B: Cảm ơn bạn, nhưng tôi muốn những váy đầm khác.)

e Other được sử dụng như đại từ (pronoun)

“other” được sử dụng như một đại từ nhằm thay thế “other ones” hay “other + danh từ số

nhiều” và “other” ở dạng số nhiều (plural form) là “others”

Ex: I don’t want to put on these shirts, let’s ask for others (Tôi không muốn mặc những áo thun này, hãy hỏi những cái khác đi.)

f Phân biệt “other” và “others”

- “other” thường kết hợp với một danh từ hoặc đại từ

- “others” vì là một đại từ nên sau nó không dùng danh từ

Ex: - Those books aren’t interesting Do you want to choose any other books? (Những quyển

sách kia không thú vị Bạn còn những quyển nào khác không?)

- Those books aren’t interesting Do you want to choose any others? (Những quyển sách kia

không thú vị Bạn còn những quyển nào khác không?)

Thật ra, đối với nghĩa thì cả 2 câu như nhau, tuy nhiên sau “other” là một danh từ số nhiều

(books) nhưng sau others không có danh từ

3 The other

The other được dùng như một từ xác định (determiners)

a The other + danh từ số ít: cái còn lại trong hai cái, hoặc người còn lại trong hai người

Ex: This company is new The other company is about 20 years old (Cái công ty nào mới Còn cái còn lại thì đã khoảng 20 năm tuổi rồi.)

b The other + danh từ số nhiều: những cái còn lại hoặc những người còn lại trong một nhóm

có nhiều thứ hoặc nhiều người

Ex: - Jack and John are here, but where are the other men? (Jack và John ở đây, nhưng những người đàn ông kia đâu?)

- The read car and black car were broken The other car are still good to use (Xe màu đỏ và

màu đen bị hỏng Những xe còn lại thì vẫn rất tốt để sử dụng.)

The other được sử dụng như một đại từ (pronoun)

Tương tự với “another” và “other” thì “the other” được dùng như một đại từ, thay thế cho những danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ đã được đề cập

Ex: - She had a book one hand and a laptop in the other (Cô ấy 1 tay cầm một quyển sách và

1 tay cầm 1 máy tính xách tay.)

- She has 2 laptops, one is grey and the other is black (Cô ấy có hai laptop, một cái màu xám

và một cái màu đen.)

4 The others

“the others” dùng để thay cho cụm“the other people”

Ex: - Some of them like reading books and the others prefer to playing games (Một số người

thích đọc sách, còn những người khác thì thích chơi trò chơi hơn.)

- Where are the others going to tonight? Restaurant or coffee shop? (Mọi người sẽ đi đâu tối

nay? Nhà hàng hay quán cà phê?)

1 “other” đóng vai trò như một đại từ thì nó có dạng số nhiều là others nhưng nếu ta sử dụng other như một từ xác định (determiner) thì nó chỉ có dạng số ít

Ex: She has no others T-shirt (Cô ấy không còn những cái áo thun khác.)

She has no other T-shirt (Cô ấy không có áo thun nào nữa cả.)

I don’t like this book, let’s ask for other (Tôi không thích quyển sách này, hỏi quyển khác xem

sao.)

I don’t like those books, let’s ask for others.( Tôi không thích những quyển sách này, hỏi những quyển khác xem sao.)

2 “other” luôn có từ xác định (determiner) đứng trước và đứng sau là một danh từ đếm được số ít Trong trường hợp danh từ là danh từ chưa xác định thì phải thay “other”

bằng “another”

Ex: - She has 2 laptops, one is grey and the other is black (Cô ấy có hai laptop, một cái màu

xám và một cái màu đen.)

- She has 2 laptops, one is grey and other is black (Cô ấy có hai laptop, một cái màu xám và

một cái màu đen.)

- At this summer, I’ll work other job (Mùa hè này, tôi sẽ làm việc khác.)

- At this summer, I’ll work another job (Mùa hè này, tôi sẽ làm việc khác.)

3 “another” = an + other nhưng khi viết phải viết liền “another” chứ không tách ra “an

other”

Ex: - Give me an other book, please (Đưa cho tôi quyển sách khác.)

- Give me another apple, please (Đưa cho tôi quyển sách khác.)

4 Sau “another” là danh từ số ít còn khi đề cập đến danh từ số nhiều thì dùng “other”

Ex: - Another books may be more amazing than it (Có lẽ những quyển sách khác sẽ thú vị

hơn.)

- Other books may be more interesting than it (Có lẽ những quyển sách khác sẽ thú vị hơn.)

Nguyên lý cần nhớ:

Phải xem xét các yếu tố sau trước khi sử dụng:

• Có là (những) thứ cuối cùng trong nhóm (nhằm quyết định dùng “the”)

• Số ít hay số nhiều (nhằm quyết định dùng “another” hay “other” )

• Phía sau có danh từ (nếu danh từ số nhiều thì dùng “other” chứ không dùng “others”)
