Dating Customs Around the World
Dating is rare in Afghanistan because most marriages are arranged by parents, and schools are separate for boys and girls The opportunities to meet are rare Girls have a 7.00 pm curfew,
while boys have an 11.00 pm curfew
It is against the law to date in Iran Teens are separated until they are of marrying age, then
their families introduce them to each other and sometimes a courtship follows
Most teens go out in large groups and don’t pair off until they are 18 or 19 years old in Australia Girl often asks boy out and pay off the date, too Couples often go to dinner parties, barbecues,
or the beach
Dating is usually a group event in Europe In Spain, teens join a pandilla, a club for a group of
friends with the same interests, like cycling or hiking Dating is done one-to-one and both girls
and boys ask each other out and split the cost of the evening’s entertainment
Trang 4In Russia, dates take place at dances or at club where teens eat or chat with friends As many
as 30 teens may come to a cinema to attend a movie together In small towns, teens meet in
the streets downtown or gather around a fountain
In Japan and Korea, most high school students don’t date or go to parties, but spend their time studying instead Dating begins in college, when only boys do the asking and pay for the dates

SECTION 3: READING (2 points)
The generation gap refers to the difference in attitudes or behavior between a younger
generation and the older one In my opinion, different attitudes towards life, different views
about certain problems, and a lack of communication can cause a generation gap in most
societies
The first factor is that parents and children generally see things from different perspectives
Choosing a career is a good example for this Many parents try to impose certain careers they
favor on their children, based on their own perceptions However, young people don’t always
understand their parents’ points of views Instead, they prefer to be free to make their own
decisions on their future career Another factor lies in differences in musical tastes, fashion, and political views between young people and their parents For example, having a pierced nose
might be viewed as fashionable by some teens, but for many parents, it is considered to be an
act of rebellion against social norms Some parents may also find their children’s behavior
unacceptable and disrespectful to traditional values
The major factor causing the generation gap is lack of communication between parents and
their children Parents tend to be dominant and not to trust their children to deal with crises
Trang 7Also, they keep talking too much about certain problems That is the reason why young people seldom reveal their feelings to their parents When facing problems, young people prefer to
seek help from their classmates or friends
The above mentioned factors could lead to a generation gap In order to bridge the gap
between the old generation and the younger one, mutual understanding is the vital key The
wisest solution would be for parents and their children to treat each other as friends
1 How many causes of the generation gap are mentioned?
A 2 B 3 C 4
2 How do young people usually react when their parents impose career choices on them?
They want to make their own decisions
They follow their parents’ advice
They try to understand their parents’ goodwill
3 What do parents often think about nose piercing?
They think that it is acceptable
They think that it is fashionable
They think that it is against social norms
4 What do young people often do when they face problems?
They share the problems with their parents
They ask their classmates or friends for help
They ask their parents for help
5 What would be the best way to narrow the generation gap?
Parents and children should try to be friends and understand each other
Parents should be tolerant and let children do what they want
Children should follow their parents' advice

There are many valuable things in life, but friendship may be one of the most important things
Life without the experience of friendship is life without living Human interaction is a necessity to survival, but friendship is an essential to the successful well-being of anyone
Friendship is a relationship which takes time to build One can think building a friendship is like planting a garden Firstly, one meets a person and plants the seed of friendship Then the
friendship builds and continues to grow stronger It requires devotion of time and patience to
achieve a true friendship Just like a garden that needs to be taken care of and watered daily to grow However, a garden may some day become withered and die Thus, one has to tend to it
and has the patience to bring it back to life Friendship also has its good and bad times There
