III/ Read the passage carefully and choose the best answers to the questions
Education is not an end, but a mean is to an end In other words, we do not educate children only
for the purpose of educating them Our purpose is to fit them for life In some modern countries it has, for some time, been fashionable to think that by free education for all – whether rich or poor, clever or stupid – one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a large number of
people with university degree; they refuse to do what they think “low” work; and, in fact, work
with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries But we have only to think a
moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important
than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food If no one
cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our house, we should get terrible diseases in
our own towns
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be
educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to our brains and
ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very
bad to be ashamed of one’s work Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to
society

Many people believe that watching television has resulted in lower reading standards in schools
However, the link between television and printed books is not as simple as that In many cases,
television actually encourages people to read ; for example, when a book is turned into a TV
series, its sales often go up
One study of this link examined six-year-old children who were viewing a special series of
15-minute programs at school The series was designed to encourage love of books, as well as to
develop the basic mechanical skills of reading Each program is an animated film of a children's
book The story is read aloud and certain key phrases from the book appear on the screen,
beneath the picture Whenever a word is read, it is also highlighted on the TV screen
One finding was that watching these programs was very important to the children If anything
prevented them from seeing a program, they were very disappointed What's more, they wanted
to read the books which the different parts of the series were based on
The programs also gave the children more confidence when looking at these books As a result of their familiarity with the stories, they would sit in pairs and read the stories aloud to each other
On each occasion, the children showed great sympathy when discussing a character in a book
because they themselves had been moved when watching the character on television

39 What kind of film is each program?

I Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer
I like to be near water – sea, lake or river That I probably because I was born in a village by the
sea, and I have lived most of my life close to water When I am in some place which is far from
lake, river and sea, I am restless and I always feel that there is something missing, even though it
is sometimes hard for me to decide what it is
Of course, the sports I like are the ones which need water – sailing, rowing and swimming It is
possible to swim in small swimming pools, but rowing and sailing are impossible without a lot of water Rowing is best in a river and sailing on the sea or a big lake, but one can do some sailing
on a river and one can certainly row on a lake or the sea when the weather is good
Of the three sports – swimming, rowing and sailing – I like rowing best because it is the easiest
to continue during the winter, when the water is too cold for comfortable swimming and the sea
is often too rough for sailing Even on the coldest day one row, only ice on the water or thick fog
can stop one Sometimes it is so cold when I go out rowing that drop of water freeze wherever
they fall In such weather, it is not very pleasant to swim as one cannot stay in the water very
long However, when is rowing, one gets warmer the longer one goes on
1 How does the writer feel when he is in some place which is not near the water?
A Comfortable
B Convenient
C Losing something
D Missing something
