Working in pairs, students discuss why the incorrect answer choices in Exercise 1.15.A and 1.15.B are incorrect How do they try to trick you? What key phrases support the

inferences?

Obtain a videotape of a documentary or educational television program Students listen to 2 or 3 minutes of the audio only, without watching the video portion Working

in small groups, make a list of facts (what is known) and a list of inferences (what can

be concluded) based on what is heard in the audio portion Groups share their lists with the class Discuss what information in the recording supports each inference Then, play the videotape again, this time with both the audio and video How does watching the video affect your understanding of the material? Are facts confirmed? Are inferences confirmed?

Obtain an audiotape of an actual university lecture Students listen to 2 or 3 minutes of the tape Working in small groups, listen for the following in the lecture: (1) topic/main ideas, (2) details/facts, and (3) reasons Then, write a list of statements that can be inferred or concluded from this information Each group shares its inferences with the whole class

Students create “TOEFL questions” to test their classmates’ ability to make inferences

Working in pairs, students choose one of the talks or lectures from Exercises 1.10 through 1.14 Use the tapescripts beginning on page 691 Divide the talk into two parts

Each student practices reading aloud his or her part, concentrating on pronunciation

Write four questions about the talk At least two questions must be inference questions

Use the list of inference questions on page 122 for examples of how to word the questions For each question, write four answer choices One must be the correct answer! Give your questions and answer choices to the teacher so that he or she can make suggestions Then, type the answer choices and give copies to the class Present your talk to the class, with each student reading his or her part and two of the questions

The class takes a “live TOEFL exam.”
