1 Working in pairs, students identify key words and phrases in the conversations in
Exercise 1.9.A that are clues to understanding the context
2 Students create “TOEFL conversations” to test their classmates’ ability to infer the
context of a conversation Working in pairs, follow this procedure:
(1) Write a short conversation with two speakers Make sure there are some key words
and phrases that provide clues to the context
(2) Pass your conversation to the next pair of students
(3) With the conversation you now have (written by another pair of students), choose
an appropriate “TOEFL question” from the list below Then, pass the conversation
and question to the next pair of students
(4) With the conversation and question you now have (written by others), write four
answer choices One must be the correct answer!
(5) This conversation is now yours Show your conversation, question, and answer
choice to your teacher The teacher may make suggestions and return the
conversation to you
(6) Type the answer choices and give copies to the class
(7) Practice reading your conversation aloud, concentrating on pronunciation
(8) Present your conversation to the class The teacher reads the questions, and the
class takes a “live TOEFL exam.”

by questions
The conversations, talks, and questions will be presented only once This means you must answer all
questions as you go
Multiple~Choice Questions
On the paper—based test, all of the questions in Parts B and C are multiple choice After each conversation
or talk, you will hear some questions and choose the one best answer of four possible choices, (A), (B),
(C) or (D) Then, on your answer sheet, you will find the number of the question and fill in the space
that corresponds to the letter of the answer you have chosen
You will have twelve seconds to read the four answer choices and answer each question
Part B — Longer Conversations
In Part B, you will hear a recording of a conversation like this one:

(Woman) I would like to change the topic of my paper I was going to write about the history
of trade, but I found something more interesting My friend introduced me to her grandparents, who came from Japan Id like to write about Japanese immigration and interview some people in my friend’s family Is that OK?
(Man) Yes, that could be an interesting paper But you’ll want to be sure you have some
historical facts Use the interview material to illustrate the history
(Woman) I found a couple of books on the Issei and Nisei
(Man) Good Also check out the web page for the Japanese American Historical Society
You may find some other useful resources there
(Woman) TH do that Thank you, Dr Gupta

Part C — Talks
In Part C, you will hear a recording of a talk or lecture like this one:
(Narrator) Listen to part of a talk in a geology class
(Woman) Large caves such as Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico are famous for their many
underground chambers and varied and majestic landscapes Delicate flowerlike and strawlike structures grow from the ceiling, as do massive curtains of stone Among the most interesting and well-known formations are icicle—like stalactites, which hang from the ceiling, and stalagmites, which are found on the cave floor
Groundwater seeping into a cave chamber contains carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere or the soil This carbon dioxide may unite with limestone to form calcium carbonate Stalagmites are produced when water drops directly to the cave floor The impact of the water striking the floor causes it to break into droplets or into a film, releasing the excess carbon dioxide, and the crystals begin to grow upward
Then you will hear a question
(Narrator) What is the talk mainly about?
In your book, you will read:
(A) Groundwater in caves
(B) The formation of Carisbad Caverns
(C) Structures that form in caves
(D) Majestic landscapes
The best answer to the question, What is the talk mainly about? is (C), Structures that form in caves
Therefore, the correct choice is (C)
Trang 8
QUESTION TYPES ON THE COMPUTER TEST
On the computer test, longer conversations and talks are in Part B There is no Part C on the computer test
The conversations, talks, and questions will be presented only once You will both see and hear the ques-
tions before the answer choices appear
There are four types of questions in Part B For each type of question, you will use the mouse to click on
one or more answers or to move text
You can take as much time as you need to answer each question; however, you should work as quickly as
possible because the entire Listening section is timed The amount of time you have left will appear on the
computer screen The time you spend listening to the conversations, talks, and questions is not counted in
the total time
You will be able to change your answer as many times as you like—until you confirm your answer When
you confirm your answer, the computer will give you the next question
You will not be allowed to return to a previous question This is because the answer you give helps the
computer determine the difficulty level of your next question
Part B — Longer Conversations and Talks
