Very few people in the modern world obtain their food supply by hunting and gathering in the natural environment surrounding their homes This method of harvesting from nature’s provision is the oldest known subsistence strategy and has been practiced for at least the last two million years

It was, indeed, the only way to obtain food until rudimentary farming and the domestication of

wild animals were introduced about 10,000 years ago

Trang 8

181

Because hunter-gatherers have fared poorly in comparison with their agricultural cousins, their

numbers have dwindled, and they have been forced to live in marginal environments, such as

deserts and arctic wastelands In higher latitudes, the shorter growing seasons have restricted the

availability of plant life Such conditions have caused a greater dependence on hunting, and on

fishing along the coasts and waterways The abundance of vegetation in the lower latitudes of the tropics, on the other hand, has provided a greater opportunity for gathering a variety of plants In short, the environmental differences have restricted the diet and have limited possibilities for the development of subsistence societies

Contemporary hunter-gatherers may help us understand our prehistoric ancestors We know from the observation of modern hunter-gatherers in both Africa and Alaska that a society based on hunting and gathering must be very mobile While the entire community camps in a central location, a smaller party harvests the food within a reasonable distance from the camp When the food in the area has become exhausted, the community moves on to exploit another site We also notice seasonal migration patterns evolving for most hunter-gatherers, along with a strict division of labor between the sexes These patterns of behavior may be similar to those practiced by mankind during the Paleolithic Period

45 What does it mean “domestication” in the first paragraph?

A adapting animals to suit a new working environment

B hatching and raising new species of wild animals in the home

C teaching animals to do a particular job or activity in the home

48 In the lower latitudes of the tropics, hunter-gatherers

A can free themselves from hunting

B have better food gathering from nature

C live along the coasts and waterways for fishing

D harvest shorter seasonal crops

49 According to the passage, studies of contemporary subsistence societies can provide

A further understanding of prehistoric times

B broader vision of prehistoric natural environments

C further understanding of modern subsistence societies

D deeper insight into the dry-land farming

50 The word “conditions” in the second paragraph refers to

A the places where plenty of animals and fish can be found

B the situations in which hunter-gatherers can grow some crops

C the environments where it is not favorable for vegetation to grow

D the situations in which hunter-gatherers hardly find anything to eat

51 A typical feature of both modern and prehistoric hunter-gatherers is that

A they live in the forests for all their life

B they don’t have a healthy and balanced diet

C they don’t have a strong sense of community

Trang 9

182

D they often change their living places

52 According to the passage, which of the following is NOT mentioned?

A Harvesting from the natural environment had existed long before farming was taken up

B Hunting or fishing develops where there are no or short growing seasons

C The number of hunter-gatherers decreases where farming is convenient

D The environmental differences produce no effect on subsistence societies

53 According to the author, most contemporary and prehistoric hunter -gatherers

C some restricted daily rules

D only the way of duty division

to each of the following questions

Vincent Van Gogh was born in Groot Zundert, in The Netherlands on March 30, 1853, to parents Theodorus Van Gough, a preacher, and Ana Cornelia Carbentus In 1869 at the age of 16, Van Gogh began a career, not as a painter, but as an art dealer with the firm Goupil & Cie He spent 7 years at Goupil & Cie where daily contacts with works of art kindled his appreciation of paintings and drawings Gradually Vincent lost interest in his work and decided to try his hand teaching at a Catholic School for boys His growing interest in religion and his desire to help the poor eventually drove him to become a clergyman In 1878 he became a lay preacher in one of the most impoverished regions in Western Europe: the coal-mining district of The Borinage in Belgium Vincent sympathized with the poverty-stricken miners and gave away most of his food and clothing

to ease their burdened lives His extreme commitment to the miners drew disfavor from the church, which dismissed him of the post Vincent however, decided to remain with the miners and began to

pain them and their families, chronicling their harsh conditions

Soon after, thanks to his brother’s financial help, Vincent decided to go to Brussels in 1880 to begin studies in art During the next 10 years Vincent painted around 872 paintings In 1882 Vincent began living with Clasina Maria Hoornik, also known as Sien, and her children, in The Hague Their volatile personalities and the strain of living in complete poverty created a stormy relationship Vincent was devoted to Sien and her children, but art always came first As his

drawing and painting skills advanced, his relationship with Sien deteriorated and they parted ways

in September 1883

In 1886 Vincent moved in with his brother Theo in Paris where he met Paul Gauguin and various other artists, who had a tremendous impact on his ongoing evolution as an artist Never truly happy

in large cities, Vincent decided to move to Arles, Provence in the South of France, where he rented

a studio and invited Paul Gaugin to live with him In December 1888 Vincent experienced a psychotic episode in which he cut off a piece of his left ear After this episode he was in and out of asylums for the next year It was thought that Van Gogh was actually epileptic and that is why people thought he had fits of insanity throughout his life He painted one of his best-known paintings, Starry Night, during one of his stays in the asylum In mid-1890 Vincent left the asylum and spent the last few months of his life in Auvers, France On July 27, 1890, Vincent Van Gogh shot himself in the chest Two days later he died with his younger brother by his side He left behind a wonderful array of paintings that make him one of the most influential painters of our time

44 Read the following passage on architecture by Lawrence B Anderson, and type A, B, C, or D

into the gaps to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 61 to 70

Architecture is the practice of building design and its resulting products; customary usage refers only to those designs and structures that are culturally significant Architecture is to building as literature is to the printed word Vitruvius, a 1st-century BC Roman, wrote encyclopedically about architecture, and the English poet Sir Henry Wotton was quoting him in his charmingly phrased dictum: “Well building hath three conditions: Commoditie, Firmenes, and Delight.” More

prosaically, one would say today that architecture must satisfy its intended uses, must be technically sound, and must convey aesthetic meaning But the best buildings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use They then survive not only as beautiful objects, but as documents of the history of cultures, achievements in architecture that testify to the nature of the society that produced them These achievements are never wholly the work of individuals Architecture is

a social art

Architectural form is inevitably influenced by the technologies applied, but building technology is conservative and knowledge about it is cumulative Precast concrete, for instance, has not rendered

brick obsolete Although design and construction have become highly sophisticated and are often

computer directed, this complex apparatus rests on preindustrial traditions inherited from millennia during which most structures were lived in by the people who erected them The technical demands

on building remain the elemental ones – to exclude enemies, to circumvent gravity, and to avoid discomforts caused by an excess of heat or cold or by the intrusion of rain, wind, or vermin This is

no trivial assignment even with the best modern technology

The availability of suitable materials fostered the crafts to exploit them and influenced the shapes of buildings Large areas of the world were once forested, and their inhabitants developed carpentry Although it has become relatively scarce, timber remains an important building material

Many kinds of stone lend themselves to building Stone and marble were chosen for important monuments because they are incombustible and can be expected to endure Stone is also a

sculptural material; stone architecture was often integral with stone sculpture The use of stone has declined, however, because a number of other materials are more amenable to industrial use and assembly

Some regions lack both timber and stone; their peoples used the earth itself, tamping certain

mixtures into walls or forming them into bricks to be dried in the sun Later they baked these

substances in kilns, producing a range of bricks and tiles with greater durability
